Overview

A supportive, skills-focused group for women who are currently participating or interested in joining an active group focused on safety, healing and change.

Power to Change is a 14-week psychoeducational group designed for 10–15 women who have experienced or are currently experiencing domestic violence. The group is currently running and provides a safe, supportive and confidential environment to explore the dynamics of abuse, build self-awareness and develop tools for healing and empowerment. Through guided discussions and activities, participants are encouraged to recognize their strengths, set healthy boundaries and make positive changes in their lives and relationships.

What to Expect
Each session combines education, reflection and guided activities. You will learn about patterns of power and control, practice new skills in the room and explore how they might fit into your daily life. You can participate by speaking, listening or simply following along at your own pace.
How We Meet
Power to Change is offered in-person at Vera House or virtually via a secure video platform integrated into verahouse.org. Before you begin attending, a staff member will review what to expect, discuss where the group is in the current cycle and confirm that this group is a good fit for you right now.

Who This Group Is For

For female-identifying survivors of trauma, in any stage of healing — including those just beginning to seek support.

This group may be a good fit if you:

  • Identify as a woman or female-identifying survivor of domestic violence or sexual assault.
  • Are currently experiencing abuse or have experienced abuse in a past relationship.
  • Want a structured, guided space to understand the dynamics of abuse and your own experiences.
  • Are interested in building self-awareness, self-worth and skills for safer, healthier relationships.
  • Prefer a confidential, facilitator-led group with clear topics rather than an open processing group.

You do not need any prior group experience, and you can connect with us even if the series has already started. You are welcome to come exactly as you are and participate in the way that feels safest and most comfortable for you.

What We’ll Explore

Across 14 weeks, we focus on understanding abuse, reclaiming choice and practicing concrete tools for change.

Topics may include:

  • Understanding how power and control operate in abusive relationships.
  • Recognizing different forms of abuse, including emotional, financial and digital abuse.
  • Exploring the impact of trauma on your body, thoughts, emotions and sense of self.
  • Building self-awareness, self-compassion and a stronger sense of your own strengths and values.
  • Setting and practicing healthy boundaries with partners, family, friends, work and school.
  • Safety planning, support options and realistic steps toward change in your relationships.
  • Identifying supportive people and resources and building a network that feels safe for you.

You choose what to share and which tools fit you. Whether you start at the beginning of the series or join partway through, the goal is for you to leave each session with at least one idea, insight or strategy you can carry into your week.
