Volunteering 

Your support and care can make all the difference to a victim of domestic violence, sexual assault or elder abuse. There are many ways you can help. Build relationships, skills, and help us end violence in our community! To become a volunteer you must:

  • Be 18 years or older
  • Be removed from your own personal crisis situation
  • Submit an application then join us for an interview!
  • Join us for agency orientation and receive basic training on domestic violence, sexual assault and elder abuse
  • Attend specialized training to work directly with victims 

Volunteer Opportunities

DIRECT SERVICE:

  • Support & Information Line Volunteers: Answering our 24-hour support line during the day and providing emotional support and information to callers.
    • Monday-Friday, 8:30 am-1 pm or 12:30-5 pm, at our administrative office.
  • Web Chat Support Line Volunteers: Coverage of our web chat resource, providing emotional support and information regarding Vera House services.
    • Web chat is answered remotely/from your home or can be answered at our administrative offices (during business hours - 8:30 am to 5 pm). Shifts for this role are available seven days a week for shifts from 8:30 am-1 pm, 1-5 pm, and 5-9 pm.
  • Family Court Volunteer: Assisting individuals petitioning Family Court for Orders of Protection.
    • Monday-Friday, 8:30 am-12:30 pm or 12:30pm-4 pm, at the Court House downtown Syracuse.
  • Sexual Assault Volunteer Advocate: Responding to sexual assault victims at area hospitals and providing emotional support and information.
    • Monday-Friday from 12am-8:30am, 8:30am-6 pm, 6pm-12am, and Saturday and Sunday 12am-6am, 6am-6pm, 6pm-12am.

NON-DIRECT SERVICE:

  • Tabling at health and volunteer fairs and other events
  • Reception coverage at our administrative office
  • Office projects - mailing, preparing materials for trainings or conferences
  • Filing and other administrative tasks
  • Special projects - White Ribbon Campaign, Clothesline Project, etc.

Upon the receipt of your application, you will be contacted to schedule an interview (in-person or video). Volunteer training sessions are scheduled throughout the year!

 


Interning

ADVOCACY INTERN

  • Engage in client-facing support
  • Systems Advocacy

PREVENTION-EDUCATION INTERN

  • Presentations/Outreach in schools, nightlife and other organizations.
  • Raise the Bar Initiative
  • Campus Sexual Assault Advocacy
  • Creation of Curriculum
  • Tabling Community Events

ABUSE IN LATER LIFE INTERN

  • Community Outreach and Prevention Events
  • Training and Presentations on Aging and Elder Justice
  • Co-Facilitating Elder Support Groups
  • Information and Referral Services with Clients
  • Opportunities to Learn about Grant-Writing and Stewardship 

LEGAL INTERN***

  • Experience in court accompaniment 
  • Experience in criminal justice system, family court and supreme court
  • Gender-affirming care (name change, etc.)
  • Family Court Orders of Protection

DEVELOPMENT INTERN

  • Fundraising
  • Social Media Engagement
  • Graphic Design
  • Special Events Coordination
  • Marketing and Communication
  • Community Outreach for Doners and Business partnerships.

CLINICAL INTERN

  • Providing Trauma focused therapy to individuals, couples, and families ages 2.5 and older
  • Facilitating support groups
  • Long term and brief crisis support services
  • Gender-affirming care
  • Specialty focus (LGBTQIA+, Substances, Human Trafficking, etc.)

 

  • *Please bring us a form from your academic advisor to receive course credits. 

**All employment is based on interest and availability. Something exciting to note is our employees can receive remitted tuition!

***There is no attorney on staff, so we are unable to support legal interns seeking pro bono hours.
