Would you like to make a difference?

Your energy, compassion and support can make all the difference to a victim of domestic violence, sexual assault or elder abuse. There are many ways you can help. To become a volunteer you must:

  • Be 18 years or older
  • Be removed from your own personal crisis situation
  • Submit an application, attend an interview and be accepted into the next training session
  • Attend an agency orientation and basic training on domestic violence, sexual assault and elder abuse
  • Attend additional specialized training to work directly with victims

Volunteer Opportunities


  • Support & Information Line Volunteers: Answering our 24-hour hotline during the day and providing emotional support and information to callers. Monday-Friday, 8:30 am-1:00 pm or 12:30 pm-5:00 pm, at our Administrative Office. We request a minimum of 2 shifts per month. 
  • Family Court Volunteer: Assisting individuals petitioning Family Court for Orders of Protection. Monday-Friday, 8:30 am -12:30 pm or 12:30 pm-4:00 pm, at the Court House downtown Syracuse. We request a minimum of 2 shifts per month.
  • Sexual Assault Volunteer Advocate: Responding to sexual assault victims at area hospitals and providing emotional support & information. Monday-Friday from 6:00 pm to midnight, midnight to 7:00 am, & Saturday and Sunday 6-hour shifts. There are also a limited number of daytime shifts from 8:30 am-5:00 pm available. We request a minimum of 2 shifts per month.
  • Shelter Volunteer: Organizing donations, office and clerical help, cleaning, mentoring children, assisting with groups. Shifts vary, we request a minimum of 2 shifts per month. 
  • Speakers Bureau Volunteer: Providing prevention and education presentations in the community on domestic or dating violence, sexual assault or abuse, elder abuse and/or mission and services of Vera House. 
  • Legal Project: Are you a law student interested in volunteering or completing an externship with the Legal Project? Contact Director of Legal Services Bryn Lovejoy-Grinnell HERE.


  • Tabling at health and volunteer fairs and other events 
  • Reception coverage at our Administrative office 
  • Office projects - mailing, preparing materials for trainings or conferences 
  • Filing and other administrative tasks 
  • Special projects - White Ribbon Campaign, Clothesline Project, etc.
  • Foster Pet Volunteer - Providing housing and care of pets (dogs, cats, etc.) for victims working with Vera House programs. Pets are reunited with their owners after a short period of time.

Upon the receipt of your application, you will be contacted to set up an interview. Volunteer training sessions are scheduled throughout the year.
