Would you like to make a difference?
Your energy, compassion and support can make all the difference to a victim of domestic violence, sexual assault or elder abuse. There are many ways you can help. To become a volunteer you must:
- Be 18 years or older
- Be removed from your own personal crisis situation
- Submit an application, attend an interview and be accepted into the next training session
- Attend an agency orientation and basic training on domestic violence, sexual assault and elder abuse
- Attend additional specialized training to work directly with victims

Volunteer Opportunities
DIRECT SERVICE:
- Support & Information Line Volunteers: Answering our 24-hour hotline during the day and providing emotional support and information to callers. Monday-Friday, 8:30 a.m.-1 p.m. or 12:30-5 p.m., at our administrative office. We request a minimum of two shifts per month.
- Web Chat Support Line Volunteers: Coverage of our web chat resource, providing emotional support and information regarding Vera House services. Web chat is answered remotely/from your home or can be answered at our administrative offices (during business hours - 8:30 am to 5 pm). Shifts for this role are available seven days a week for shifts from 8:30 a.m.-1 p.m., 1-5 p.m., and 5-9 p.m.
- Family Court Volunteer: Assisting individuals petitioning Family Court for Orders of Protection. Monday-Friday, 8:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. or 12:30-4 p.m., at the Court House downtown Syracuse. We request a minimum of two shifts per month.
- Sexual Assault Volunteer Advocate: Responding to sexual assault victims at area hospitals and providing emotional support and information. Monday-Friday from 6 p.m.-midnight, midnight-7 a.m., and Saturday and Sunday six-hour shifts. There are also a limited number of daytime shifts from 8:30 a.m.-5 p.m. available. We request a minimum of two shifts per month.
NON-DIRECT SERVICE:
- Tabling at health and volunteer fairs and other events
- Reception coverage at our administrative office
- Office projects - mailing, preparing materials for trainings or conferences
- Filing and other administrative tasks
- Special projects - White Ribbon Campaign, Clothesline Project, etc.

Upon the receipt of your application, you will be contacted to set up an interview. Volunteer training sessions are scheduled throughout the year.
