About Don McPherson

Vera House is grateful to Don for lending his voice, time, and platform to this work.

Don McPherson is a global leader in engaging boys and men in the promotion of Aspirational Masculinity and the prevention of gender-based violence. He recently launched ASPIRE New York, a partnership with the New York State Office for the Prevention of Domestic Violence to bring Aspirational Masculinity to communities across the state.

A highly decorated all‑America quarterback at Syracuse University and a member of the College Football Hall of Fame, McPherson transitioned from seven years of professional football to the field of gender-based violence prevention in 1994.

In 2019, he published You Throw Like a Girl: The Blind Spot of Masculinity, chronicling four decades of using sport to address complex social issues and highlighting a quarter century of work on gender-based violence prevention.

Don McPherson is the 2021 recipient of the William Pearson Tolley Medal for Distinguished Leadership in Lifelong Learning from Syracuse University’s School of Education and the 2020 National Football Foundation’s Outstanding Contribution to Amateur Football—honors that reflect a lifelong commitment to using his platform for the greater good.

Why It Matters

Showing up for this event helps fuel safety, healing, and prevention in our community.

When our community gathers around books and conversation, we create more space for survivors to be seen and heard, and for new ideas about masculinity, consent, and respect to take root. Partnering with Don McPherson and Barnes & Noble during Sexual Assault Awareness Month allows Vera House to reach new audiences and deepen support for critical services and programs.
