In Onondaga County, 112 referrals regarding suspected Elder Abuse were received by Protective Services for Adults in 2010. Knowing that only 1 in 35 Elder Abuse incidents are reported, we estimate there were over 3,800 incidents of Elder Abuse that were never reported last year.
2011 World Elder Abuse Awareness Day Overview
World Elder Abuse Awareness Day is recognized each year on June 15th. This year Onondaga County recognized the 6th Annual World Elder Abuse Awareness Day with a free community event held at the Jewish Community Center. Our theme was "Justice For All--Ending Elder Abuse, Neglect and Financial Exploitation" and topics included:
• Elder Abuse in our community
• Role of NYS Adult Protective by Alan Lawitz, Director of the NYS Bureau of Adult Services
