Changing the community standard
In 1986, a public hearing on domestic violence
was conducted in Syracuse
by the NYS Governor's Commission on Domestic Violence
and co-sponsored locally by
Vera
House, Inc.
&
the CNY Chapter of the Women's Bar
Association.
At the hearing, battered women and service providers presented testimony
about
the gaps in domestic violence services
and inappropriate responses by the
justice system.
After the hearing, the
Syracuse Area Domestic Violence Coalition
was formed,
to work toward changing the
community standard in
responding to domestic violence.
In 2006, the Coalition
expanded the breadth of its mission
to include issues of sexual violence, and is now the
Syracuse Area Domestic
and Sexual Violence Coalition.
Staffed and administered by Vera House,
the Coalition brings together
survivors
and representatives from
a
broad spectrum of community organizations and
professional groups to meet and address local
services,
legal development
and system-level change.
