Meet our new Vera House Foundation members in 2007:

Jeffry Comanici

Jeffry Comanici was named Assistant Dean for Advancement for Syracuse University’s College of Visual and Performing Arts in April 2006. Prior to that, he was Executive Director of the Syracuse Symphony Orchestra. He joined the SSO in 1999 as Director of Development. A native of Pittsburgh, Mr. Comanici came to Central New York to attend SU’s Whitman School of Management, from which he earned a B.S. in Marketing and Finance in 1988, after which he began a five-year career in marketing and management at two national retail operations. From 1994 through 1999, Mr. Comanici served as Associate Director of Development in SU’s School of Information Studies and then as the University’s Director of Development for Major Gifts. He has also been active in the S.U. Alumni Organization. Mr. Comanici is a graduate of Leadership Greater Syracuse, for which he has volunteered as a Youth Leadership mentor. He was recognized as a "40 under 40" community leader in 2005. Mr. Comanici is very active in the local community, serving currently on the Board of Directors of the Komen Race for the Cure, Oakwood Cemetery, and serves on the Investment Committee for DeWitt Community Church. Mr. Comanici and his wife, Julie, have four children and reside in DeWitt.

Fred Fiske

Since 1980, Fred Fiske has worked for The Post-Standard, where he was editorial page editor for 17 years and is now Senior Writer. Majoring in history and literature at Harvard, Fred received his masters in Journalism from Columbia. He worked at the Bucks County (PA) Courier Times before coming to Syracuse. Among the organizations with which he has served are the National Conference of Editorial Writers, the Onondaga Citizens League, the Pulitzer Prizes, Literacy Volunteers of Greater Syracuse and Syracuse University’s PARC program (Program for the Analysis and Resolution of Conflict /Community Advisory Board). He also is a member of the community board for Syracuse CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates for children in foster care). Fred has been an adjunct journalism instructor at SU’s Newhouse School. He is currently beginning his second year as president of May Memorial Unitarian Universalist Society of Syracuse. Among Fred’s interests are song-writing, keyboard playing and performing, and stamp collecting. Fred and his wife, Chris Shultz, are parents of three grown children. They live on Allen Street in Syracuse with their three foster children, whom they plan to adopt.

Julie Flack

Julie Flack is corporate vice president for compliance and governance administration for Lifetime Healthcare, Inc., the parent company of Excellus Health Plan. She directs all administrative and operational functions pertaining to ethical and regulatory compliance for Lifetime Healthcare, Inc. and its various subsidiaries and affiliates. She is also responsible for the development and management of all governance operations for the corporation. Julie received a B.S. in economics from SUNY Oswego, and a Master’s degree in public administration from Syracuse University’s Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs. A resident of Manlius, she is married with two sons and is a member of the board of directors for the National Women’s Hall of Fame. She previously served on the board of directors for Partners for Education and Business, the boards of the Onondaga County Chapter of the American Cancer Society, Syracuse Meals on Wheels, Junior Achievement of Central New York, Hiscock Legal Aid Society and Caring Program for Children.

Margaret Losito

Margaret Losito received a bachelor’s degree in Accounting from Siena College in 1981. She worked as an accountant for Cohoes Memorial Hospital from 1981 to 1984. After marrying Dr. Vito Losito and moving to Syracuse, she was employed by Speno Rail Services in East Syracuse as an accountant until 1990 when a merger dissolved her position. Once her two girls started school, Margaret became very active volunteering in their schools. She found volunteering was a great way to stay informed and active in the community in which her daughters were involved, and she now feels ready to help out in the greater Syracuse community and work with Vera House on its Foundation and other volunteer opportunities.

Gregory Threatte

Dr. Gregory Threatte is Professor and Chair of the Department of Pathology at Upstate Medical University. He was recently appointed Associate Dean of Student Affairs for Multicultural Resources. Following a three-year post-doctoral fellowship at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory in Berkeley, CA, Dr. Threatte became an Assistant Professor of Pathology at the Georgetown University Medical School. In 1986, he returned to Upstate Medical University as Associate Professor of Pathology and Deputy to the President for Minority Affairs.
